Owning a 1991 Gypsy in a city like Kathmandu

Owning a 1991 Maruti Gypsy in Kathmandu

When I moved to Kathmandu for work, I was in dire need for a reliable form of transport. That was when I decided to buy a Maruti Gypsy. It all started with making a budget that would not break my bank. Luckily, I was also blessed with a great friend who knew a reliable dealer in town, and he helped me purchase this car.

The whole process of buying the car was smooth and straightforward; I did not have to go through the tedious process of verification. I got it for around NRS. 6,00,000. The first day of owning my Gypsy was splendid, and I was excited to explore and feel the pleasure of driving.

I had purchased a 1991 petrol-engined version and it was in perfect working condition. The design of the car was pretty basic; there were large round headlamps, cloth covers for the seats, a box sandwitched column for the gear console and a basic interior trim. However, I loved the car because of its simplicity. Above all, I was quite fond of the four-wheel-drive option; it made navigating the narrow and winding roads of Kathmandu easier.

The story of my Gypsy didn’t end on the first day of ownership. I was also eager to know how much mileage it had to offer. Thankfully, as per my expectations, the car provided me with an excellent fuel average. Although the type and grade of fuel used did affect the mileage, it still managed to give me an average of 10.5km/L, without fail. This was an impressive performance for a vehicle with that age.

The car ran smoothly for the next five years with minimal maintenance; I only had to get it serviced or repaired every few months. This was an exceptional performance by my Gypsy. Also, the car never failed me, no matter the roads or weather conditions; it got me going from one corner of the city to another with reasonable spending on fuel.

A few months back, I decided to sell my Gypsy because of the rising prices of the petrol. After five years of owning this car, I had forged a deep emotional bond with it. But, anyway, I sold the car with a heavy heart and made sure that the buyer was trustworthy.

Overall, owning a Maruti Gypsy in Kathmandu was a good experience for me. It allowed me to explore this beautiful city while being easy on the pocket for me, cost and maintenance wise.
