Legend of Dhumba Lake

The lake has an intriguing story surrounding its origin as a sacred lake. According to legend, the lake water once inexplicably turned red and remained that way for an extended period of time. It was only after lengthy and arduous sacred ceremonies and rituals performed by devoted Tibetan Buddhists that the water of the lake returned to its natural, awe-inspiring color. As a sign of their devotion and respect, the locals never attempt to fish from the lake. There are other various stories that further emphasize the holiness of the lake, as people have come to pray for drastic positive changes in their lives.

Getting to Dhumba Lake from Jomsom

Getting from Jomsom Bazar to Dhumba lake is an adventure that many travelers enjoy. You can start off your journey by taking a jeep ride up to Kagbeni winding through the dramatically changing terrain. From there, it’s just a short hike of about 45 minutes until you reach Dhumba Lake. Be prepared for the altitude once you arrive: if you’re not used to high altitudes, take some time to get used to it before making your descent down towards the lake—which will leave you in awe of its entirety. The views at this point are spectacular and worth every step it took to get here!
